Cool-Aid Portrait (2009)

This self-portrait was constructed by needle-felting wool roving onto a found tea-towel that had been dyed in my apartment's kitchen using Koolaid powder (to obtain the fluorescent colours). The concept of high and low culture are examined through the literal juxtaposition of cheap powdered drink mix against the Cordon Bleu Paris tea towel, as well as through the metaphorical juxtaposition of the tradition of classical portraiture against the utilitarian origins of textile production.
