House of Windsor Toile (2009)
It was in a screenprinting class in my 2nd year of art school that I first learned the history of the "Toile de Jouy" pattern. "Toile de Jouy" is a type of repeated decorative pattern, usually consisting of a white or cream background on which a complex pastoral scene is printed in a single colour. These pastoral scenes generally involve couples picnicking, children frolicking, gentlemen on horseback or ladies strolling arm-in-arm, amidst flowers, shrubbery and lush landscaping.
Inspired by traditional Toiles, my House of Windsor Toile represents the epitome of modern "people of leisure" - the British Royal Family. This yardage depicts various members of the Royal Family pursuing their leisurely (if not controversial) pastimes - drug abuse, playing polo, adultery, and animal husbandry.
This yardage was printed in four different colourways - Off-white, pink, yellow, and violet. The cotton fabric was first dyed using Procion MX reactive dyes, and then printed with screenprinting pigment. The off-white colourway was a one-colour print, while pink, violet, and yellow colourways were 2-layer prints.
